Prunus armeniaca
Apricot is a deciduous tree that belongs to the plum genus (Prunus) and the rose family (Rosaceae). The tree is of medium height and can grow up to 12 m tall.
The fruit is yellow-orange in color, with a velvety skin and soft, aromatic flesh. Apricot fruits have a large hard stone containing a kernel similar to an almond.
Apricot kernels, which are also known as apricot almonds or bitter almonds, come from Armenia, and we also find them in the north of China and in parts of Asia.
Apricot pits are usually white, but when dried they turn a nice brown color. They are very nutritious and are a rich source of protein and fiber, iron, zinc, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin B17, which have beneficial effects on the immunity.
You should be moderate with apricot pits, because the natural chemical compound amygdalin (vitamin B17, which is also attributed to a positive effect on immunity) - can be toxic in larger quantities. Considering the above - only 5 - 7 seeds per day are recommended.
They are ideal as an addition to cereals for breakfast or as a daily snack.
