Mexican Oregano
Mexican Oregano
Lippia graveolens
Mexican oregano, as the name suggests, grows in Central America.
It has long been used in Mexican cuisine and historically has been used as a tea for medicinal purposes. The flower of this plant has an intense fragrance, so it is used in the perfume industry.
FLAVOUR
It has a similar flavor to Italian oregano but is stronger and has citrusy and earthy notes.
USED fresh or dried.
BUYING AND STORAGE OF MEXICAN OREGANO
Fresh Mexican oregano leaves can be found in Mexican and Latin American markets, while dried ones can be found in spice shops like Harissa Spice Store.
Stored in a dry and cool place, it can last for months.
CULINARY USE
To enhance the aroma of Mexican oregano, lightly crush it between your palms before adding it to the dish.
It is used in Mexican cuisine to season almost all dishes, such as chicken, bean soups, enchiladas, and mole. It enhances the flavor of peppers and chilies, so it is often used in chili con carne and chili blends, as well as in Tex-Mex cuisine.
Many recommend using Mexican oregano for Mexican dishes because it complements the flavors much better than standard Mediterranean oregano.
GOOD WITH cumin, basil, chili, paprika, garlic, pepper.
