Chakalaka is a spicy vegetable dish traditionally served with bread, pap (a cornmeal porridge similar to polenta), stews, and curries.
It is said to originate from Johannesburg, but there are numerous variations depending on the region and family tradition. Some variations include ingredients like beans, tomatoes, onions, and garlic.
There is a debate whether chakalaka is a dish or a spice mixture. Nowadays, it is possible to find chakalaka spice mix as a convenient option for preparing this dish.
To make a simple version of chakalaka, heat oil in a pot, add finely chopped onions, garlic, and fresh green pepper. Sauté until the onions are translucent, then add the spice mixture, a can of baked beans, and tomato sauce (or diced tomatoes) and let it simmer for a while. While beans are a common ingredient, they are not mandatory.
South Africans use chakalaka spice mix as a rub for grilling meat, and chakalaka dish as a side that is often served with meat.
